Question
My parents visited my boyfriend and me last month. We gave them our bed to sleep in so that they would be more comfortable. Because of time limits, we were not able to change the sheets before they arrived. After they left, my partner and I realized that one of us had given the other one pubic lice. Is there any chance that they may have caught the lice by sleeping on our sheets? Should I bring it up to them?

Answer
Yes, if the two of you (or even one of you) had contracted pubic lice prior to their visit, there is a chance that the lice or their eggs could have been in the sheets. There are several questions about the timing: When were the lice contracted, how far had they spread by the time of your parent's visit and had the lice been transferred to the sheets? So, I guess the bottom line is yes, it is possible, but how probable depends on all of these factors.

As far as discussing the issue with them, it really depends upon your relationship with them. Do you feel comfortable brining up the topic? Do you think that you would be judged in a way that is upsetting to you? Would it be better to let them bring it up and then address it at that time? You are the only one that knows what might be the best approach with your parents. The only issue that I might keep in mind is that if either one of your parents picked up the public lice, I would be concerned that they blame each other for contacting it from someone outside of their relationship. If you decide to bring it up, practice how and what you might say. This will make you feel more prepared for this potentially uncomfortable conversation. The good news is that pubic lice, while potentially uncomfortable are not particularly dangerous.

I guess this story goes to show that one should always make time to change the bed sheets!
