Question

Please try and answer this question as soon as possible, as it is ruining my
life. I started using Depo-Provera almost two years ago and have constant
bleeding. I swear I am on my period more often then not. Is there any possible
way to stop the bleeding and what will happen if I quit using this contraceptive?
Will it get any better?

Unfortunately, breakthrough bleeding is a fairly common occurrence with Depo-Provera.
Indeed, almost all women taking a form of progestin-only contraception will
experience changes in their menstrual pattern. Interestingly, some women will
actually find that they have less frequent periods, though many will have problems
similar to the ones you are experiencing. With Depo-Provera, breakthrough bleeding
is less likely to occur over time and may in fact shift to amenorrhea (lack of
periods) after a year or so. However, given that you have been on this form of
contraception for two years, it is unlikely that it will suddenly get better.
Therefore, you should probably speak to the doctor that originally prescribed
Depo for you. There are a number of things you can take to regulate your menstrual
cycle, most commonly oral contraceptives. Of course, this pretty much makes taking
Depo redundant, but at least it will quickly give you relief from the bleeding. If
you simply stop taking Depo-Provera, it will take anywhere from three months to
a year for your normal menstrual pattern to return. And, of course, you will no
longer be protected from pregnancy. Good luck to you.
