Is it true that if you use Depo-Provera for longer than four or five years that
you can become sterile and unable to have children?

I have no idea where this rumor started, but it has no basis in truth. You can
safely take Depo-Provera for as long as you like and still have children later.
Perhaps the reason some people think that Depo impairs fertility is that it does
take some time to clear the body. After you have started injections, it can take
up to a year for you to be able to become pregnant again. However, this method
of birth control has been used for decades by millions of women in over 100
countries. There has never been any reports of impaired fertility.
Of course, many women who were once taking Depo do find that they have problems
conceiving -- as do women who have not taken Depo. It is very easy to
assume that it must have been caused by a particular medication. The research
is really clear on this though: You can take Depo-Provera safely for as many
years as you like and still not have a reduced chance of becoming pregnant
later.
