I think I am allergic to Nonoxynol-9. The problem is that seems to be the main
ingredient in all gels which are used in conjunction with a diaphragm. Are you
aware of any gels which contain some other type of spermicide?

You are correct that almost all brands of diaphragm jelly contain Nonoxynol-9
as the active ingredient. You may be in luck though. There is another form of
spermicide used in some types of jelly. It is known as benzalkonium chloride.
The trick will be to find it: As far as I know, all major American manufacturers
are now using Nonoxynol-9. Of course, there is no reason you couldn't order
some from another country (assuming you are in the United States). In fact,
there are a number of websites that offer to ship nonprescription forms of
contraception to the United States.
However, before you try that, I would strongly suggest trying a couple other
brands of diaphragm jelly. Many women are actually allergic to the fragrance
or one of the other ingredients, not the Nonoxynol-9. If all else fails, you
should speak to your doctor about an alternative method of contraception. A
good possibility might be the cervical cap which is similar to the diaphragm
but doesn't require spermicide. Good luck to you.
