I have had norplant for about four and a half years. I am nearing my fifth year
and in search of a new birth control. Is it bad to get depo after having a long
term birth control like norplant? Thanks.

There is no reason why you should not be able to begin using Depo-Provera (Depo)
as your primary form of birth control after having the Norplant removed. In fact,
Depo acts very similarly to Norplant. Both contain a form of synthetic
progesterone (a hormone produced in greater amounts when you are pregnant,
thus preventing further conception). The primary difference is in delivery
method. Norplant is a series of rods that release the hormone slowly, while
Depo is given as a shot once every three months. Some women do report side
effects from both, most commonly breakthrough bleeding (spots of blood at
times other than menstruation), moodiness, and weight gain. If, however, you
were happy with Norplant, there is little reason to suspect that Depo would
cause any problems. Since you need to have a doctor remove the Norplant anyway,
you can discuss the possibility of going onto Depo at that time. She or he may
want you to wait a month, or may give you a shot right away. Good luck to you.
