Question
Is it possible for a woman to become pregnant if she's in a hot tub, bathtub, or swimming pool with a man who has ejaculated? Thanks in advance.

Answer
The chance of a woman getting pregnant from a man ejaculating in the same pool is somewhere between the chance of getting hit by lightning and a giant moose falling from the sky (more towards the moose probability).

Let's think through what would have to occur for a woman to get pregnant in such a scenario.

  1. She would have to be in a fertile period of her cycle. Given that this only occurs for a few days each month we have lowered the chance about fivefold.

  2. The man would have to ejaculate pretty much directly into the water. If he had a bathing suit on, it would absorb most of the semen.

  3. The semen would somehow have to float over to the woman.

  4. The semen would then have to enter her vagina. If she is wearing a bathing suit, the chances of this are about nil.

  5. All of this would have to occur very quickly given that sperm don't survive for very long outside of the body.

  6. Almost any body of water like a hot tub, pool, etc. will have chlorine, which will kill sperm on contact.

  7. So, let's say that the woman is fertile, the man ejaculates directly into the water (without chlorine) it floats over to the woman (who is not wearing a bathing suit) and enters her vagina within seconds. One would wonder how many viable sperm would still be in the semen. Unless the man is shooting directly into her vagina, millions of sperm will be lost en route. Those that make it will most likely no longer be motile, and thus will be unable to impregnate an egg.

  8. But, let's say that a few live sperm make it. That is not sufficient to impregnate a woman. Almost all sperm never survive the trip up a woman's fallopian tubes. A man has to have several million live sperm in each ejaculation to be considered fertile. So, what are the chances that millions of sperm would survive this trip? Pretty much zip!

Therefore, while it is theoretically possible, I think your time would be better spent buying a hard hat to avoid injury from that moose!
