Is there a home cure for scabies? A friend of mine told me to take a bleach
bath, but I am not sure what that is.

Let me jump straight to the point, since I know you are itching for an answer:
Yes, there is a home cure, and no, a bleach bath is not it!
Scabies is caused by the sarcoptes scabiei parasite and is accompanied
by a red, intensely itchy rash in infected areas. Small bumps, resembling
pimples, may also appear. Infection occurs immediately and can sometimes be
contracted through non-sexual means such as sharing towels or sleeping in the
bed of an infected person. After infection, the scabiei mites tunnel
beneath the skin to lay eggs. When these eggs hatch, the baby mites tunnel to
the surface, starting the whole process anew. Symptoms are usually felt within
two to six weeks, or in a matter of days in cases of reinfection. Although
there are no known complications, the condition can be very uncomfortable.
Usually it is best to see a doctor to confirm that you do indeed have scabies,
but if you are certain, you can treat it on your own. Although scabies and pubic
lice are often mistaken for one another, the treatment for both, luckily, is the
same. There are a number of prescription and over-the-counter creams, lotions,
and shampoos such as Kwell, RID, and Nix that are very effective at curing
scabies. Follow the directions on the box carefully! Also, all clothes, bed
sheets, combs and other personal articles must be washed or treated, since
scabiei mites can live for over 24 hours once they leave the body. This is
where the bleach comes in -- it is for your clothes, not you! Good luck, and
get treated before your friends start calling you Scratchy.
