My wife and I are trying to get pregnant without a lot of success. The doctor
recommended I get a fertility test. How exactly is the semen retrieved for
analysis? Are there several common methods or is it simply done "by hand"?

Yes, it is done "by hand" -- and that would be your hand, by
the way. If you live close enough to the clinic, you can perform the "procedure"
at home then bring the "specimen" in via thermos. Otherwise, most
fertility clinics have a nice little room with some magazines and videos to help
with "retrieval." If you like, your wife can also help out. Don't
worry, no probes or rubber gloves are needed. Good luck.
