About 14 years ago I had a vasectomy to relieve my wife of the chore of taking
the pill, and to allow for worry-free sex. Which it did. However, my wife recently
started suffering from painful menstrual periods. Six months ago she informed me
that her ob/gyn had prescribed her birth control pills to ease the pain. Is this
a viable therapy or is she roaming around behind my back?

While I cannot answer as to the fidelity of your wife, I can assure you that
birth control pills are indeed often prescribed as the first course of action
for menstrual pain. This, in and of itself, should not alarm you in any way.
Instead, what I would ask you to consider is why you suddenly have such
suspicions. If you really believe that your wife is lying about her pain,
what her gynecologist said, and who she is having sex with, this says to me
that all is not well in your relationship. I would focus less on trying to
catch her in a lie, and more on why you have such suspicions in the first
place. If necessary, seek out a qualified marital counselor.
I wish both of you luck.
