I have debated with my friends about this one for quite some time. We hope that you can settle this for
us once and for all. Is it possible to get an STD from using a tanning bed right after someone infected
has used it?

I hate to say "never," but this is pretty close. Very few sexually transmitted
infections (STIs) survive for long in the open air. Although some STIs can live
in a hospitable environment (such as warm, wet towels) for a brief period of
time, I don't think tanning beds qualify as "hospitable." Indeed, ultraviolet
radiation is very effective at killing many bacteria and viruses. Plus, all
tanning salons have rules governing the beds being cleaned and disinfected
between patrons. I really don't think this is something to worry about. The
long-term damage to your skin, however is another matter.
