Lubricant - Also referred to as "lube." A water- or silicone-based mixture used to make masturbation or intercourse more pleasurable by enhancing or providing a slippery feel. Ingredients (which can include flavoring and herbs) and prices vary, but water-based lubes are the most widely used as they are appropriate for most sex toys (they won't cause damage to pricey silicone and realistic materials) and are generally safe for use with condoms. Silicone-based lubes are generally for use in water, but are also popular with couples because they don't usually become absorbed, thereby reducing or eliminating the need for reapplication. Lubricant also comes in many forms: liquid, gel, and thicker creams. Thicker lubes are often used for anal play and sometimes include a desensitizer.
How To Select a Lubricant
We know selecting a lubricant can be confusing. Fortunately, if you answer three simple questions, it's easy!

1. Results: What do you want this lube to do?

  • Are you looking for a lubricant that feels as natural as possible? Then a water-based lube may be more to your liking. Affordable and available in a wide selection, you can experiment with different lubes without spending too much money.
  • Do you want something with more staying power? A silicone-based lube is ideal because it doesn't absorb into the skin. It's also perfect for use in the water or with waterproof toys!
  • Will you be using this lube for anal play? You'll probably want a thicker lubricant, possibly with a desensitizer in the formula.

2. "Extras": Any other characteristics you want in this lubricant?

  • Are you looking for a lube to make oral play even more pleasant? Try a flavored lubricant.
  • Do you want to add an extra kick to your sexual encounters? Try a lube that warms or that includes different ingredients such as ginseng, yohimbe or even hemp. Some people feel heightened sensations thanks to these all-natural additives -- you never know!
  • Will you be using the lube with condoms? Then please, please be sure to read the description to ensure the lube is condom safe. If you aren't sure, email customer service and they will be able to tell you.
3. Size: Are you using it mostly at home or are you more on the go?
  • Would you like something to keep handy in the bedroom? Then you would probably prefer a larger size container that's also easy to dispense from, such as a pump bottle.
  • Do you prefer something that you can throw into your bag or your pocket? Anything less than two ounces is ideal. Some lubes also come in super-convenient locking tubes or sampler travel packs.
  • Are you interested in having a variety of different kinds of lube to try? Then try our Sensual Lubricant Sampler.
Things to Keep in Mind
You're about to choose the lube of your dreams, so we just have a few more items for you to consider:

  • Not sure about the best way to use lubricant or if you should even use it? Read all about it here!
  • If cleanup is an issue for you, stick with water-based lubes as they simply need a rinse with water and they're gone; most are non-staining as well.
  • Concerned about reactions or irritation? If you experience discomfort after applying a lubricant, wash it off immediately and see your doctor if a rash appears or does not fade in a day or so. As you're dealing with a very sensitive and delicate area, you may have to try a few before you find one you like and that likes you!
  • Make sure you have a copy of the MyPleasure Customer Service email or phone number in case you have questions!
Now that you've found a lubricant that you like, enjoy it in good health and great pleasure!

FAQ
Should I use a lubricant with my sex toy?
Yes! You should always use lubricant with any sex toy. We recommend using lubricant for manual masturbation and intercourse.

What type of lubricant should I use?
That depends on what type of sex toy you have! Look for your answer in Lubricant - How Do I Use It With Sex Toys?

Can I use a lubricant underwater?
Silicone lubricants are great for use underwater. For more information, please read Slippery Sex.

Will I have a reaction to a lubricant?
Though it's unlikely, some people with extreme sensitivities may experience some skin reactions to certain lubricants. If you're extremely sensitive, we'd recommend you stick to a water-based lubricant, such as Climax H2O, and definitely stay away from flavored lubricants.

What type of lubricant is best for anal sex?
The best type of lubricant for anal sex is a thicker, creamier, water-based lubricant. Though petroleum-base lubricants will also be smooth, they are not condom safe. We recommend Liquid Silk. If you are not concerned about using your lubricant with a condom, you may want to consider Anal Eze, which also has a light touch of desensitizer for more comfortable entry.

What's the deal with flavored lubricants?
Adding a little zing, flavored lubricants are great for oral sex. They are also safe for use during intercourse, but then you don't get to experience the flavor!

How do I clean up my lubricant?
That depends on what type of lubricant you use. Check out our article, Slippery Sex, for more details on specific types of lube.

How much lubricant should I use?
Start out with about a dime's worth in your hand, and then from there you can determine how much you need. You can find more information in our article, Lubricant - How Do I Use It With Sex Toys?

Can I use massage oil for lubricant?
We really don't recommend using massage oils as lubricants. Not only will they ruin condoms, but they generally aren't designed for lubrication and may cause reactions, be harder to clean up and wear away faster, resulting in discomfort. We suggest you stick with a specific sexual lubricant.
